1875 in Tomerong Cmtry, Tomerong, New South Wales, Australia. She married William John Smith in Dumfries,
Dumfries, Scotland, 1811. William was born in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland April 17, 1791. William was the son of John Smith
and Jane Oliver. William died March 22, 1862 in Cow Creek, Tomerong, New South Wales, Australia, at 70 years of age. His
body was interred March 24, 1862 in Numba Cmt, Numba, New South Wales, Australia. He was christened in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland.
(See William John Smith for the continuation of this line.)
She was christened in Galloway, Scotland. NOTES: Letters of John SMITH 1940-44. In the notes of her Grandson John Alexander, he calls her Sarah. John also noted that he was present at her funeral in Tomerong. These notes might be interpeted as being with Sarah his older sister. He said that he was 10 at the time of the funeral. He stated that her middle name was Margaret. DEATH CERTIFICATE Death Certificate NSW 9691 9 Apr 1875. Copy of original not transcribed. Father: Alexander Ireland. Occupation: Farmer. Mother: Sarah McMurray Witness: Wiliam Smith and Sarah Smith Informant: John Smith son of Nowra Place of Marriage: Dumfries (Noted as 1811 on husband's death certificate 1862) Born: Carleton Hill, Gallowayshire, Scotland. 34 years in NSW. Children John 58, William 42, Robert 47, Thomas 54, Alexander 50. 4 males and 1 female deceased (11/04/94. Noted in Bolton. Samuel June 26 1825, Joseph July 15 1827 and Thomas Nov 30 1823 and Henry June 26 1825. Need to qualify whether all the same Wm & Margaret.) BIRTH RECORDS. Microfilm of original. Dumfries, Dumfries Parish Records. In the Dumfries records of all children's births Jannett, John, William and Thomas Buchanan, noted as Margaret Alison. (Somewhat unusual as the wife's surname is most often missing in the original Dumfries records.) IMIGRATION RECORDS: Sydney. THE BROTHERS 1841. Microfilm of original record. Her immigration records note her as reading and writing and being a native of Castle Douglas, Galloway. The daughter of Alexander Allison labourer and Janet McMurray. Occupation Servant. OBSERVATION: Carleton Hill was noted on her death certificate. Kelton Hill is a small village right next to Castle Douglas. CHILDREN: It is apparent that William who was born Dumfries in 1817 must have died since another William was christened in Bolton. There is no corellation to the the death records and burials in Dumfries. Researched AIS/1982. Suggest that he died in Bolton. Daughter Mary SMITH arrived on the Brothers with William and Janet. Unable to trace either Janet or Mary in Australia. Unable to trace son Alexander or Thomas Buchanan as noted on death certificate. Robert SMITH moved to Albury NSW as per J.A SMITH letters. CONFLICTS: Noting the birth certificates in the Old Parish Records microfiche the only records for the birth and family name existed at Kirkpatrick Irongrey a church near Grove. The distances are quite small as being 3 miles NW of Dumfries. After reviewing all of the records it is possible that the birth records are correct. The McMurray family are also noted as residents in Castle Douglas and in Kirkudbright. Death certificate only noted one daughter dead and none living. There were two daughter Jannet and Mary. Unless Mary in 1841 was not their daughter and she was taken out to Australia. We know that they had to lie about there age to qualify and that Jannet Smith daughter was 27 and stated her age as 21. Thomas Buchanan SMITH their second son did stowaway on the Brothers. His wife followed him later to Australia. Since Jannet had to be a spinster possibly Mary was her daughter. Noted as Margaret McMurray on husband Williams's death certificate. On the death certificate of her son John Smith her name was noted as Ellison. Ellison was also used as a middle name by her grandson William SMITH for his children. William lived at Rocky Flats and was the oldest son of William Smith Margaret's youngest son. In 10/15/94 after reviewing the original records of Kelton Hill no Allisons were listed for the years in question, I could not find a birth record. I have not been able to find the marriage of Margaret to William SMITH, 1811. As per notes of GF SMITH 1940. COMMENT: The most accurate records concerning her name would be the Dumfries birth certificates and the immigration records. The others should be ignored.
