He married Margaret Alison in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland, 1811. Margaret was born in Kelton Hill, Kirkudbright, Scotland about 1790. Margaret was the daughter of Alexander Alison and Janet Mcmurray. Margaret died April 9, 1875 in Tomerong, New South Wales, Australia, at 84 years of age. Her body was interred April 11, 1875 in Tomerong Cmtry, Tomerong, New South Wales, Australia. She was christened in Galloway, Scotland.

He was christened in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland. NSW Death Certificate 5907/223. Noted as farmer. Parents John Smith and Oliver. Spouse Margaret McMurray. Married in Dumfries 1811. 3 sons living 5 children dead. SMITH family of Dumfries was researched by Mrs Carlile (Todd) of Heber City Utah. Data is still being reconstructed. 1/95 06/11/93 Don Carlile of Logan Utah will forward his mothers research. Mrs Carlile annotated all Births/Marriages for Dumfries, Kircudbright Galloway. Lived in Dumfries. Iron Moulder as per family records. Both the sides of the family have items from the foundry. Lois Wake has an iron stand and there is a pair of sea brasses as well in Dapto. I am having a difficult time in associating William Smith with being a involved with a foundry. There are directories that have been researched in great detail. Noted as Mechanic on immigration records. Dumfries: New Iron Foundry, English Street, 1814. Porter and Co moved to Dumfries and Galloway Foundry 1818. Stakeford Iron Foundry for sale 1831. Palmerston Brass Foundry owner John Stafford.1822. Bolton Directories. The Bolton Director for 1829. William Smith, foundryman The Flags. (Churchgate) Mackie's Almanack for Bolton 1836. William Smith Shopkeeper Dawes Street. In 1821 John Smith Church Wharf Foundry, Little Bolton. Jackson and Brothers, Wharf Foundry. 1838 Smith and Howarth, brass amd ironfounders, Blackburn Street. John Smith is noted as a machine maker. A John Smith is note as a Roller Maker in 1836 and 1843. Bolton le Moors, Bolton. Noted as a ?? in the Birth Record of son William at Bolton le Moors. The Curate of Bolton Le Moors Church was the testifier on the emigrant records. Letter of George Franklin Smith. AIS. SMITH DOC Purported to be over 22 stone a 6 foot 8 inches in height. Took a partner and moved to Bolton Lancashire at Bambers Yard in 1821. (Most of letter is correct except some names and positions. Willam was his name not John. He married Margaret Allison not Buchanan. His brother could not have been a Colonel. Might have been in the Army though.) The Buchanan name though does come up and there must be substance. I have checked all direct connections and so far 7/93 without success. Reviewed OPR for Dumfries 1/95 no intermarriages noted Records of assisted emigrants: NSW Arvhives. Emigrated to Australia in 1841 on the Brothers as assisted emigrants. Wife; Margaret. Children; Mary Ann, Robert and William. Daughter Janet also was on board. Noted as laundress. Voyage took 7 months. (Unusual length of time possible munity on board ML) Noted as a Mechanic and that he was able to read and write. (It would appear that he had modify his birth date since he exceeded the maximum age for assisted emmigrants.} I do have pictures of the Brothers and notations as to the activities on the voyage. There is a suggestion that there was a mutiny on one of the voyages. This voyage took over 7 months a rather long time. I do have a plan view of the cabins on the Brothers. As well as the list of supplies etc given to each family member. The Brothers was an emmigrant ship. I do believe that the log is available in the NSW Archives. Pair of small statues are held by David Smith of Dapto and came on the Brothers. Might have had a Land Grant in 1841 as suggested by Bob Smith. Received about a years pay as a bonus. Paid to each member of the family. Moved to Sydney. 3 William Smiths noted. The William on George Street is a possibilty. A William Smith is noted at Newtown 1847. Checked all electoral Rolls and Directories. Moved to Saddleback, Jamberro in 1847. At this period settlers were clearing land for farming. Possibly leased land from Paterson. Moved to Bolong (Clearground) or Numba in 1856. Land owned by Alexander Berry. Possible location is on Smith Lane, Numba. (Intersects with Jindy Yandy Road.} Moved to Cow Creek in Farnham County, Shoalhaven in 1860. It is apparent that the house was at the creek as noted in map (1876). Land owned by Hoskins, Dunrovin and Aralada are property names on map. Died at Cow Creek 1862. Listed as a farmer at death and as a ?? in Bolton. Strongly suggest that his profession was a farmer later in life. Illawarra Mercury 1st Apr 1862 Page 2 Mr William Smith Snr., late of Bolong was buried with his apron at Numba Cemetary. The hearse left Cow Creek a distance of 26 miles. He was buried with the rites of the Scots Church and Mr Mason was witness. He had been a resident of the area for 23 years. (Mr Mason was listed as the undertaker.) Masonic Lodges in Dumfries.(Dumfries Paper) Creebridge Lodge 1788,1797,1810. Creebridge St Andrew's Lodge 1802. Dumfries Free and Accepted Masons 1778. Letter of R. Faulkner 4.6.91 Earliest Lodge were founded at Kiama in 1871 and Nowra 1877. Letter from NSW no records of William in Sydney as the early records are not extant. The GRAND LODGE OF SCOTLAND 06apr94 Williams Smith Lodge Dumfries Kilwinning #53 17 NOV 1837 and Operative Lodge #140 19 June 1823 Future Research Folow up the Masons in Dumfries Scotland concerning early records. Review the Alexander Berry Papers at the Mitchell Library. Follow up on references in the Dumfries paper. Unable tor read index for SMITH. Contact the family of Carlile to obtain the research papers on the Smith family in Dumfries. Mrs Carlile researched the Smith family for 20 years. Obtain photos of Numba Cmt., Cow Creek and Jamberro. Research the Birth records of the other children. Their birth dates have been obtained from the death certificates, these are consistent. Thomas Buchanan, Robert and Alexander. Since there is a difference between her certificate and that of William her husband it is possible that two of the sons Thoms and Alexander arrived Australia later than 1862. Daughter Janet might have married James Hall in 1851.

William John Smith and Margaret Alison had the following children:

child 6 i. Arthur4 Smith. Arthur died in Manning River, New South Wales, Australia. Noted in the letters of JAS. No other records. Might be one of the deceased children noted in both mother and fathers death certificates. Research: Need to follow up on the possibilty of this person being dead prior to his mothers death.

child 7 ii. Jannet Smith was born in Dumfries, Dumfrieshire, Scotland, U.k June 5, 1813. She married twice. She married Robert Todd in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland, January 24, 1836. Robert was born in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland. (See Robert Todd for the continuation of this line.) She married James Hall in St Andrews, Presbyterian, Sydney, Australia, September 3, 1852.

She was christened in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland, June 6, 1813. This entry needs further research. The Todd relation might be in error and she might have died early in childhood. A Janet Smith did accompany her parents to Australia. Her age is listed as 21. I have merged both entries. 10/26/94 Noted on the Brothers manifest as being an unmarried female immigrant. Parents on board. Age 21 occupation laundress. Have researched NSW records and can only find one marriage to a James Hall. Since a death record is unavailable for a Janet Smith it would suggest that she married or left the colony.

child + 8 iii. John Smith was born March 27, 1815.

child 9 iv. William Smith was born in Dumfries, Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland November 3, 1816. William died about 1818 in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland. He was christened in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland, November 3, 1816. This William shows the same problem as Janet. If a child died their name was given to a younger child. Research: Need to research the Dumfries records.

child 10 v. Thomas Buchanan Smith was born in Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland January 30, 1819. Thomas died in New South Wales, Australia. His body was interred in New South Wales, Australia. He was christened in St Michaels, Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland, January 31, 1819. Dumfries St MIchaels Christening 01/31/1819 Re: Notes from George Franklin Smith. This is the gentleman that had just got married and went to sea accidently when the ship sailed. His new wife was given passage to Australia but he missed her again since he returned to England. It is uncertain when they reunited. George Franklin Smith 1941. A story passed in the William Smith family line that a Thomas Buchanan was shanghiad in Glasgow and jumped ship at Eden. Noted as being 54 at his mothers death in 1875. Further research into the logs of the Brothers is required. As he was not in the listing of the emigrants. Since he was noted in his mothers death certificate it is most probable that he remained in Australia. Research: Need to review the single men listing on the Brothers.

child 11 vi. Alexander Smith was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England about 1825. Supposed to have joined the Horse Artillery. Letter of George Franklin Smith 1941. Noted as 50 years old on mothers death certificate 1875 so it is most probable that he remained in Australia at that time.. Research. Have no indication of his arrival in Australia, Need to look at the single men listed on the Brothers since he would have been over 16 at the time. His sister was listed with the single woman. Need to check Bolton records.

child + 12 vii. Robert Smith was born about 1828.

child + 13 viii. William Smith was born October 27, 1833.

child 14 ix. Mary Ann Smith was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England about 1836. Arrived Australia with family in 1841 Have not been able to locate her death or marriage. She was 5 in 1841 as noted on the immigrant record.
