He was christened in Whitsome Parish, West Newton, Berwickshire, Scotland, November 29, 1776. Described himself as an East Lothian Farmer. Oral history indicates that he was captured in Denmark and suffered privations in prison. Made application to emigrate to Austrlia in 1816, with Brother in law Michael Henderson It can be noted that William, Isabella and Michael were the first settlers to pay for their passage to Australia. Free passage was disbanded in May 1816. On the 21 December 1816 the Transport Office advised Henry Goulburn that passage was available on the convict ship "Canada" moored on the Thames River at Deptford. Ship left Deptford on 21/12 and arrived in Cork to pick up convicts. She finally left on 21 March 1817. Arrived "Canada" in 1817. Extensive history in the book "A branch of the Johnson Clan"
